Who Is It For?

Which patient groups may benefit from respiratory physiotherapy — from breathlessness to chronic lung disease, from surgery to children.

Overview

Respiratory physiotherapy is not only for people with lung disease

Breathing is directly linked to muscle strength, posture, movement habits and stress. A respiratory assessment can therefore be meaningful for people arriving with very different pictures: someone living with chronic lung disease, someone awaiting surgery, and someone who simply tires quickly without any diagnosis.

The groups below are those seen most often in practice. Recognising yourself here does not mean respiratory physiotherapy is right for you; suitability is decided together with medical assessment and a face-to-face respiratory assessment.

Information

The information on this page is for general guidance and does not replace individual advice. A physiotherapist does not diagnose; they assess and plan a programme within the framework of medical referral. Which techniques are suitable for you is determined through a face-to-face respiratory assessment. Please consult your doctor and physiotherapist before starting.

Emergency warning

Sudden or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, bluish discolouration of the lips or nails, or confusion may signal an emergency. Do not attempt exercises in such a situation; call the emergency number (112 in Türkiye) or go to the nearest emergency department without delay.
